Project Lead Designer (Senior)

The Project Lead Designer assumes a leadership role in projects varying in size, quantity and complexity based on skill and experience. This role continues to be a champion of Bennett Design interior design project processes – Discover, Plan, Implement, Monitor and Close, including Pure Design™ – with the high level of detail and documentation that our firm is known for. This role is critical in developing other team members through training, coaching and providing ongoing learning opportunities. The incumbent will have a NCIDQ qualification.
This position reports to the Team Lead Project Designer.

Role and Responsibilities

All Team Project Work

• Design and execute interior design projects varying in complexity from proposal through concept and development, construction phase and close out, responsibilities include:
o Manage multiple projects from beginning to finish, adhering to timelines and budgets
o Attend all project kick-off meetings, working to develop a high-level understanding of all project objectives, project charters, work plans, project decisions and direction
o Lead initial concept development with the project team and for own projects
o Perform project set up, ensuring AutoCAD drawings are site accurate
o Set up drawings and converts to BDA standards
o Site verifications
o Update base building drawings
• Coordinate Engineering groups (mechanical, electrical, communications and structural)
• Participate in all Team Meetings
• Performs work using d.i.g.™ principles, practices and applications

Individual Project Work

o Source finishes, equipment and requesting quotes from manufacturers and suppliers
o Responsible for preparing and issuing off renderings, initial and final
o Generate drawing packages
o Coordinate with outside consultants, architects, engineers and trade partners
o Revise drawings and construction documents as required to ensure accuracy with site conditions
o Participate in client meetings and design presentations

Contract Management

• Assist with assigning project work according to plan
• Execute project work according to Project Plan
• Perform subcontractor coordination
• Assist with leading team meetings, as required
• Complete photo shoots
• Manage construction schedules, deliverables and milestones as per contract
• Work to complete project within project hours as allocated in the Project Plan
• Oversee the work on subcontractors ensuring project deliverables are on track
• Assist with additional service requests (ASRs)
• Provide weekly project status updates to Team Lead (hours, schedule, resourcing)
• Asist with the preparation of all change notices and instructions
• Assist with shop drawing reviews
• Assist with deficient reviews and reporting

Client Relationship Management

• Manage client expectations and be accountable to communication project timelines, concerns and maintain regular and consistent touch points with client
Documentation and Process Quality Assurance
• Review design development, construction documents and shop drawings for content accuracy and overall design integrity
• Maintain compliance with Building Code
• Ensure work is consistent with regulations, procedures, plans, drawings and specifications
• Practice Risk Management as it relates to managing design projects

People Management

• Audit the work of project team members for accuracy, consistency and quality
• Mentor junior/intermediate designers and assist in developing a culture for professional advancement, recognition and reward for exceptional work

Organizational Support

• Comply with and identify opportunities to improve all BDA standards and processes
• Act as an ambassador of the BDA culture and core values
• Complete Request for Proposal (RFP) walkthroughs
• Provide proposal and ASR support as required by senior team members
• Complete and submit timesheets on Friday of each week
• Approve timesheets by Monday at 11:00 am each week, as required
• Perform ‘librarian of the month’ duties when appointed
• Generate Pure Design reports when required
• Assist with Student Internship Program
• Attend all training sessions and participate in continuous learning as required
• Attend all mandatory in office meetings as required (Bennett New Year, Quarterly Town Hall, Performance Reviews etc.)

Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications

Education & Specialized Knowledge

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in Interior Design from a recognized accredited College or University
• National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ)
• Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) membership
• Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) membership
• Proficient in building code requirements, laws, standards and regulations as it relates to project work, with the ability to interpret and apply
• Proficient in the interior design process from Discovery to Project Close Out phases
• Adept in various products and materials and their use and application for project work
• Proficient in building systems
• Familiar with project monitoring, budgeting and tendering
• Familiar with various types of engineering and how to coordinate efforts


• Minimum five (5) years’ experience in interior design
• Proficient in AutoCAD and/or SketchUp/Vray and all Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to successfully prepare a schedule for Design projects
• Accountable to deadlines and deliverables
• Ability to incorporate a workplace strategy approach to projects
• Organize and schedule tasks effectively and can effectively handle several tasks and problems at once
• Open to different and new ways of doing things and has a willingness to modify one’s preferred way of doing things
• Ability to anticipate and recognize problems and gather information and notifies the Team Lead/Senior Team Lead of problems in a timely manner
• Adapt well to changing priorities, deadlines and directions
• Exercise a professional approach with others using all appropriate tools of communication

This role has no direct reports.

Working Conditions

This role is permitted to work remotely in addition to working from the Bennett Design office. Employees working remotely must comply with all company policies and practices listed in the Employee Handbook, including but not limited to, the Mobility Policy, Health & Safety Policy and Attendance Policy. In this role you are required to occasionally, travel to the client site for site visits, site measures, and deficiency walk-throughs. Travel includes to and from job sites through the province of Ontario and throughout Canada. At times, you may also be required visit construction sites and may be required to wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety hats, boots, vests etc.).

Physical Requirements

This role involves sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing for extended periods of time.
